Merrisa Brown is a senior majoring
in journalism and history. She is originally from Urbandale,
Iowa, and graduated from Urbandale High School in 2000.
Brown is the president of the
UI chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ)
and has been a member since Sept. 2001. She has also been
on the staff of earthwords, the UI’s undergraduate
literary magazine, since Oct. 2001 and is the current editor-in-chief.
Brown
has written for the SPJ Newshawk, The Daily Iowan, Iowa
Journalist, WOI-TV.com, The Des Moines Register,
the American Society of Newspaper Editors’ Reporter,
and the Online News Association's 2003 conference Web site.
She has also done Web design for Iowa Journalist,
WOI-TV.com, the ASNE Reporter, and the UI Department
of Microbiology.
After
graduation, Brown will intern on the copy desk of the San
Antonio Express-News for the summer as part of the
Dow Jones Newspaper Fund program. After interning, Brown
plans to find a job on the online team of a newspaper or
magazine. In her spare time, she enjoys surfing the Internet,
reading, watching movies, listening to music and playing
with her cats, Felix and Baxter.
